These are bedtime stories that are best read aloud to children of seven years and upwards. They will send children off to the land of nod with all the ingredients necessary for happy and exciting dreams. There are five titles in the Herbert Heaps Hippopotamus series.

It all began in a tent on the Mendip Hills near Priddy, one warm summer night. At bedtime during a camping expedition a little girl said to her Dad: "Please tell us a story." So I did.

The following morning the people in the plot next door moved their tent a little closer. They said it was to avoid some knobbly stones that were sticking up through the floor of their tent, but we thought they were hoping to hear what all the nocturnal giggling had been about. We never knew if they found out, but they certainly gave us funny looks for the rest of the week!

During the day we went out and had adventures of our own and at night we settled down and shared the curious and often convoluted adventures of that truly remarkable character, Herbert Heaps Hippopotamus and his brother Hubert Humphrey Hippopotamus.

These five books recount the adventures of Herbert Heaps Hippopotamus, an engaging character who stomps crudd (this is a technical term for the stuff they make bricks out of) in the brickworks while his brother is a chartered accountant at the head office in Basingstoke of the company that owns the brickworks.

Outside work the brothers engage in many amazing and exciting activities, most of which include the consumption of Chelsea Buns by the trayfull, gallons of ice cream and Guinness, ably assisted by their friends from the brickworks and many charming people they meet along the way.
